Pen 3 Fan is for walkers who are ready to turn a familiar mountain into a bigger endurance challenge. It’s a great opportunity to build your mountain fitness, practise managing your energy over a longer day and test your determination as the climbs add up.
A good level of fitness and previous hillwalking experience are strongly recommended. You should be comfortable with repeated steep climbs and descents, uneven ground and several hours of walking in potentially cold, wet or windy conditions.
-
The challenge involves climbing Pen y Fan three times in one day via the main mountain path, returning to the starting point between each ascent.
The first climb gives you a feel for the route and a chance to settle into your pace. The second and third bring the endurance element into focus, with tired legs making familiar ground feel increasingly demanding.
Your guide will manage the pace and breaks throughout, assessing conditions and the group’s progress before each repeat. The planned three ascents remain subject to suitable conditions on the day.
-
November in the Brecon Beacons can bring cold temperatures, strong winds, rain and low cloud, with frost, ice or snow possible on higher ground.
Repeated climbs mean balancing warmth while moving with extra layers during breaks. Suitable mountain footwear, warm clothing, full waterproofs and a head torch will be essential, with preparation guidance provided before the trip.
-
Your challenge will be led by an experienced Eternal Adventures guide, providing navigation, support and encouragement throughout. A full safety briefing will be given before we set off, and appropriate group safety equipment will be carried.
Although the route follows an established path, repeated ascents and descents create a demanding day. Your guide will monitor the group’s pace, fatigue and the changing conditions, adjusting or shortening the challenge where needed.
