Experience this iconic Welsh peak, literally meaning ‘Chair of Idris’, and the wonderful crater lake at the foot of the mountain’s face. With a very light non-graded scramble at the summit, this is a very exciting and enjoyable walk that has a beautiful charm all of its own.

Cadair Idris feels like the perfect bridge between your earlier adventures on Pen y Fan and the bigger days still to come on Snowdon. You’ll walk through dramatic glacial scenery, stand beside the stunning Llyn Cau (one of Wales’ most beautiful mountain lakes), and finish with that rewarding final push to the summit. On a clear day the views stretch across the Mawddach Estuary, the Rhinogs, and out to the sea — a true highlight of Eryri National Park.

    Fitness level: Moderate to good fitness required. You should be comfortable walking 9.5 km with 893 m of ascent on steep ground.

  • We meet at Ty Nant Car Park and follow the classic Minffordd route up through the valley to the dramatic Llyn Cau crater lake. From there we climb the steep face of Cadair Idris, finishing with a short, fun non-graded scramble to the summit. After enjoying the views we descend the same route.

  • July weather in Eryri can be changeable — it may be warm in the valley but cooler and windier on the exposed summit. Layers and proper waterproofs are essential. Full weather and kit guidance is provided in your Welcome Pack after booking.
